STANTON Issue: Probably born in Rensselaer Co., N.Y. [Brian: probably not]

      85. BENJAMIN b. ca. 1784
      86. CARPENTER b. ca. 1786

MAHAB was devised 5 shillings in accordance with her father’s will, dated 12-4-1787 and probated 2-15-1806. NO mention of this WILLIAM STANTON is found in the STANTON Genealogy; family tradition records his son BENJAMIN probably was the grandfather of EDWIN STANTON, President LINCOLN’S Secretary of War. Research on the STANTON genealogy does not substantiate this family folklore. [Brian: agreed]

      Descendants of Benjamin Bartlett Stanton
Benjamin Bartlett Stanton appears in records of Newburgh in the early 1800s. He sells his land in Newburgh to his brother Timothy and moves to Michigan in the late 1840s, where he had received a patent for land. In 1850 he and his son Solomon are residents of Barry County, Michigan. Information on this family came from Carol Frens, back in the 1980s and Duane L. Kenaga, who sent family group sheets in Dec. 1999.

      (A) Soloman Slater Stanton was born 16 Dec 1808, Newburgh, NY, married Rebecca, d/o David and Sarah Vance, born 13 July 1812, Newburgh, NY, died 2 June 1879, aged 90, Johnstown Twsp, Barry Co., MI, buried Banfield Cem. Solomon died 3 Apr 1890, Johnstown Twsp., Barry Co, MI, buried Banfield Cem. Their child was

      (1) Benjamin Vance Stanton

      (B) Isaac Stanton, born 4 June 1815, Orange County, NY, died 4 Jan 1892, Barry County, MI. He married Elmira Vance, daughter of David and Sarah Vance. She was born 1818 and died 1918 in Michigan. Their children are as follows:

      (1) John Jefferson Stanton was born 14 Sep 1837 Newburgh, NY died 1921, m. Mary Isabell Willcox, 1862
      (2) Sophia Stanton, born 1841 Orange County, NY, died 1929, m. John Pitts, 1861

      (6) Morris O. Stanton, born 1858 died 1 May 1929, m. Ada Irene Horn
      (7) Elizabeth Stanton, born 1862 died 1884

      (C) Thomas Stanton, born 1826 Newburgh, Orange County, NY, died 29 June 1865 Nashville, TN, bur National Cem., Nashville, TN. There is evidence in the 1840 federal census, Newburgh NY, that he was married and had a daughter. He apparently died while serving in the Civil War.

May have had sons, James and George Stanton who remained in the Newburgh, New York area
